There’s Still A Hope: Starting Again For Pig Breeding

Multiplication of Stube HEMAT in Sumba - Livestocks

“There is no secret to success. Success is the result of preparation, hard work, perseverance, and willingness to learn from failure.”

The words above match with the experience of pig breeders in Sumba under the direction of Stube HEMAT Multiplication in Sumba and Apriyanto Hangga as the Multiplicator. After almost two years of African Swine Fever (AFS) and Hog Cholera viruses attacked pigs in Sumba and traumatized breeders to raise pigs. They were afraid to start raising pigs again for fear of the virus outbreak.

It took time to strengthen and rebuild the spirit of the breeders because they still have the will to raise livestock but they did not know what to do if the virus attack again and how to raise pigs in a good way so they can thrive well. Through continuous approaches, dialogues, and visits, the spirit finally reappeared.

The pig breeding group 'Harapan Kita', a group formed by the Stube HEMAT Multiplicator in Sumba with 24 families as members succeeded in taking care of the pigs. Seven of pigs have given birth. This was a blessing from their hard work and the result of perseverance and collective struggle when the virus hit and the group tried to protect their livestock by vaccinating 48 pigs in February 2021. As time goes by, some of the pigs have been sold to meet the needs of the family and some are kept until they give birth at this time. This is a special moment when people find it hard to get piglets after the virus attack, but they now produce piglets.

From regular discussions, it was revealed that pig farmers hope the vaccination program can be carried out again because it has proven to be very helpful to maintain the stamina of their livestock. They are grateful for the Multiplication of Stube HEMAT in Sumba which provides regular visit and assistance and even support through activities that lead them to success.***
